Russian, Ukrainian and US negotiators willhold talks in the United Arab Emirates later, in what officials say will be the first meeting attended by all three countries since Moscow launched its full-scale invasion nearly four years ago.<\/p>\n

The Kremlin confirmed Russian officials would attend the talks following a meeting between President Vladimir Putin and US envoys in Moscow.<\/p>\n

Russia described those talks as \u201cuseful in every respect\u201d, but said a long-term peace deal could not be reached until territorial issues had been resolved.<\/p>\n

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said he regarded the Abu Dhabi talks as \u201ca step \u2013 hopefully towards ending the war\u201d.<\/p>\n

Present at the Thursday night meeting with Putin and two other Russian aides were three US representatives, including Steve Witkoff, and Donald Trump\u2019s son-in-law Jared Kushner.<\/p>\n

Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov said the talks were \u201csubstantive, constructive and very frank\u201d, but reiterated that any agreement for durable peace would not be possible without resolving territorial issues.<\/p>\n

\u201cUntil this is achieved, Russia will continue to consistently pursue the objectives of the special military operation,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Ushakov added that Putin emphasised Russia was \u201csincerely interested\u201d in a diplomatic solution.<\/p>\n

\u201cWithout resolving the territorial issue according to the formula agreed upon in Anchorage, there is no hope of achieving a long-term settlement,\u201d he said, a reference to the summit between\u00a0Trump and Putin in Alaska\u00a0last year.<\/p>\n

Witkoff last year said that Russia had agreed to allow the US and Europe to give Ukraine \u201crobust\u201d\u00a0security guarantees\u00a0as part of a potential peace deal.<\/p>\n

After meeting with Trump in Davos, Zelensky also made clear that the future status of territory in eastern Ukraine remained an unsolved issue ahead of talks in Abu Dhabi.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s all about the land. This is the issue which is not solved yet,\u201d Zelensky told reporters in Davos, adding that \u201cthe Russians have to be ready for compromises, not only Ukraine\u201d.<\/p>\n

On Friday, he told journalists: \u201cThe Donbas issue is key. It will be discussed as will be the modality of how the three sides see it.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added that he regards the Abu Dhabi talks as \u201ca step \u2013 hopefully towards ending the war \u2013 but different things can happen\u201d.<\/p>\n

The territorial\u00a0sticking points\u00a0include Russia\u2019s demand that Ukraine give up the 25% of the Donetsk region that Kyiv still controls.<\/p>\n

The head of Ukraine\u2019snational security and defence council, Rustem Umerov, held talks with US officials in Davos, along with Kyrylo Budanov, the head of Zelensky\u2019s office, and negotiator David Arakhamia. They will be joined in the UAE by the chief of the general staff, Andrii Hnatov.<\/p>\n

On the Russian side, the delegation in Abu Dhabi will be led by General Igor Kostyukov, director of Russia\u2019s GRU military intelligence agency, while investment envoy Kirill Dmitriev will meet with Witkoff separately to discuss economic issues.<\/p>\n

Zelensky said last month that a 20-point US plan to end the war was 90% ready and that Ukraine\u2019s position on Donbas, in eastern Ukraine, was different to Russia\u2019s.<\/p>\n

He has offered to withdraw troops by up to 40km (25 miles) from the region in order to create an economic zone in Donbas, if Russia does the same.<\/p>\n

The US proposal for Ukraine\u2019s industrial heartland in Donbas is for a demilitarised and free economic zone in exchange for security guarantees for Kyiv.<\/p>\n

Zelensky also told reporters in Davos that he had reached an agreement with Trump on future US security guarantees for Ukraine in the event of a deal.<\/p>\n

He gave no details but said it would need to go before the US Congress and Ukrainian parliament before signing.<\/p>\n

Overnight, both Ukraine and Russia reported drone attacks.<\/p>\n

In messages posted on Telegram, Penza Oblast governor Oleg Melnichenko said a drone attack caused a fire at an oil depot in Penza, an area south east of Moscow.<\/p>\n

In Ukraine, the general staff of the armed forces reported an air attack that saw drones hitting 12 locations overnight.<\/p>\n

Recent Russian strikes on key infrastructure targets have been leaving many people in Ukraine to face freezing temperatures without heating or power.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
