The Keta Municipal Health Directorate in the Volta Region has reported a surge in\u00a0mumps\u00a0cases, sparking concerns among residents in the area.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The disease, caused by a viral infection, has spread rapidly in the Municipality, with about 50 persons\u00a0reportedly affected\u00a0in the Keta Township.\u00a0<\/p>\n

A nurse at the Keta Municipal Health Directorate, Madam\u00a0Tsoeke\u00a0Dzorgbenyui\u00a0Seanefu\u00a0disclosed\u00a0that mumps\u00a0is\u00a0a highly contagious disease that affects the salivary glands. She linked the outbreak to poor hygiene and overcrowding.\u00a0<\/p>\n

She explained that symptoms include swelling of the parotid glands, fever, headache, muscle aches, and loss of appetite. In some cases, complications such as meningitis or orchitis may occur.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThe causes of mumps include the\u00a0mumps\u00a0virus, which spreads through respiratory droplets, contact with infected saliva, and contaminated surfaces,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Madam\u00a0Seanefu\u00a0emphasised\u00a0that mumps\u00a0spreads\u00a0through direct contact with an infected person\u2019s saliva or respiratory droplets, sharing food, drinks, or utensils, and touching contaminated surfaces.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThose at highest risk of contracting mumps include unvaccinated children and adults, people living in crowded areas, and individuals with weakened immune systems. <\/p>\n

The effects of mumps can be severe, including meningitis (inflammation of the lining around the brain and spinal cord), orchitis (inflammation of the testicles), and oophoritis (inflammation of the ovaries),\u201d she added.\u00a0<\/p>\n

To prevent or curb mumps, she\u00a0advised residents to\u00a0visit hospitals or the nearest health\u00a0centre\u00a0for vaccination (MMR vaccine), practice good hygiene by washing hands regularly under running water, avoid sharing food, drinks, or utensils, and stay away from infected individuals.\u00a0<\/p>\n

She urged residents to\u00a0prioritise\u00a0hygiene and seek medical attention early if symptoms persist.\u00a0<\/p>\n

She noted that\u00a0mumps\u00a0cases are treatable with rest, hydration, and pain management, but medical attention is crucial to prevent complications.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Keta Municipal Health Directorate is closely\u00a0monitoring\u00a0the situation and working to\u00a0contain\u00a0the outbreak through public education on mumps, its treatment, and vaccination services for affected individuals.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
