The UK government has defended a deal to give the Chagos Islands to Mauritius and lease back a key military base, following criticism from US President Donald Trump over its handling.<\/p>\n

In a post on social media, Trump labelled the move as an \u201cact of great stupidity\u201d, months after he and senior US officials endorsed it. Later on Tuesday he confirmed he was \u201cagainst\u201d the deal.<\/p>\n

The UK government said it would \u201cnever compromise on our national security\u201d, while the prime minister\u2019s official spokesperson insisted the US still supported the move.<\/p>\n

The UK signed the \u00a33.4bn ($4.6bn) agreement in May, under which it would retain control of\u00a0a UK-US military base on the largest of the islands, Diego Garcia.<\/p>\n

In a post on his Truth Social platform that morning, Trump had said: \u201cShockingly, our \u2018brilliant\u2019 NATO Ally, the United Kingdom, is currently planning to give away the Island of Diego Garcia, the site of a vital U.S. Military Base, to Mauritius, and to do so FOR NO REASON WHATSOEVER.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is no doubt that China and Russia have noticed this act of total weakness.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added: \u201cThe UK giving away extremely important land is an act of GREAT STUPIDITY, and is another in a very long line of National Security reasons why Greenland has to be acquired.\u201d<\/p>\n

Responding, the prime minister\u2019s official spokesman said that the US supports the deal and \u201cthe president explicitly recognised its strength last year\u201d.<\/p>\n

He added that it was also backed by the UK\u2019s Five Eyes allies, the other members of which \u2013 besides the UK and US \u2013 are Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.<\/p>\n

Asked if he could categorically say the Chagos deal would go ahead, even though it is still going through Parliament, the spokesman said: \u201cYes. Categorically, our position hasn\u2019t changed.\u201d<\/p>\n

Earlier, a UK government spokesperson said it had acted \u201cbecause the base on Diego Garcia was under threat after court decisions undermined our position and would have prevented it from operating as intended in future\u201d.<\/p>\n

They added that the agreement had secured the operations of the joint US-UK military base \u201cfor generations, with robust provisions for keeping its unique capabilities intact and our adversaries out\u201d, and noted the deal had been welcomed by allies including the US.<\/p>\n

Questioned about his position on the deal at the White House later on Tuesday, Trump said: \u201cWhen they originally were going to do it they were talking about doing some concept of ownership, but now they\u2019re looking to essentially just do a lease and sell it, and I\u2019m against that.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Chagos Islands are a \u201creasonably important area of the globe\u201d, he said, adding: \u201cI think they should keep it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know why they\u2019re doing it \u2013 do they need money?\u201d Trump added.<\/p>\n

Mauritius\u2019 attorney general Gavin Glover said he still expects the agreement to go ahead.<\/p>\n

In a statement he said it was \u201cimportant to remember\u201d that the deal was \u201cnegotiated, concluded and signed exclusively between the United Kingdom and the Republic of Mauritius\u201d.<\/p>\n

He added: \u201cThe sovereignty of the Republic of Mauritius over the Chagos Archipelago is already unambiguously recognised by international law and should no longer be subject to debate.\u201d<\/p>\n

The agreement followed a long-running dispute between the UK and Mauritius \u2013 a former British colony \u2013 about sovereignty over the Chagos Islands.<\/p>\n

The Chagos Islands were separated from Mauritius in 1965, when Mauritius was still a British colony. Britain purchased the islands for \u00a33m, but Mauritius has argued that it was illegally forced to give them away as part of a deal to gain independence.<\/p>\n

Under the deal agreed in May last year, the UK would hand over sovereignty of the islands to Mauritius, while retaining control of the military base on Diego Garcia.<\/p>\n

It would lease back Diego Garcia for a period of 99 years \u2013 at an average cost of \u00a3101m a year. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said that was necessary to protect the base from \u201cmalign influence\u201d.<\/p>\n

Before signing the deal, the UK offered Trump an effective veto, because of its implications for US security.<\/p>\n

Allies of the president had criticised the plan, but during a\u00a0meeting with Sir Keir in the Oval Office\u00a0last February, Trump said \u201cI think we\u2019ll be inclined to go along with your country\u201d.<\/p>\n

After the agreement was signed in May, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said in a statement that\u00a0Washington \u201cwelcomed\u201d the deal.<\/p>\n

He said it secured the \u201clong-term, stable, and effective operation of the joint US-UK military facility at Diego Garcia\u201d, which he described as a \u201ccritical asset for regional and global security.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rubio added that \u201cPresident Trump expressed his support for this monumental achievement during his meeting with Prime Minister Starmer at the White House.\u201d<\/p>\n

A government bill\u00a0to implement the agreement between the UK and Mauritian governments is currently in its final stages.<\/p>\n

On Tuesday, Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch said in a post on X that the prime minister now had \u201cthe chance to change course on Chagos\u201d.<\/p>\n

She said that \u201cpaying to surrender the Chagos Islands is not just an act of stupidity, but of complete self sabotage\u201d.<\/p>\n

Reform UK leader Nigel Farage, who has long been a critic of the deal, said in a post on X: \u201cThank goodness Trump has vetoed the surrender of the Chagos islands\u201d.<\/p>\n

Liberal Democrats leader Sir Ed Davey said Trump\u2019s comments showed Sir Keir\u2019s approach to the US president \u201chas failed\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Chagos Deal was sold as proof the government could work with him, now it\u2019s falling apart,\u201d Davey said in a post on X.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s time for the government to stand up to Trump; appeasing a bully never works.\u201d<\/p>\n

Labour MP and chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee, Emily Thornberry, told BBC Radio 4\u2019s Today programme that while the UK should take Trump \u201cseriously\u201d, it should not take his comments \u201cliterally\u201d.<\/p>\n

She described his comments on Tuesday as an example of \u201cpresidential trolling\u201d, saying she was \u201cin favour of keeping calm and trying to sit this out\u201d.<\/p>\n

Two British Chagossian women born on Diego Garcia \u2013 Bernadette Dugasse and Bertrice Pompe \u2013 want the right to return to their place of birth and say they were excluded from discussions over the deal.<\/p>\n

Pompe told the BBC she views the US president\u2019s criticism of the deal as a \u201cgood thing\u201d but \u201conly words\u201d.<\/p>\n

Over WhatsApp, Dugasse said: \u201cI want the deal to stop and not [see] money [given] to the Mauritius government.\u201d<\/p>\n

She said Chagossians should be allowed to \u201csit at the table and decide our future\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
