The Tema Port\u00a0remains\u00a0a critical frontline in Ghana\u2019s efforts to prevent the smuggling of illicit small arms into the country and the wider West African sub-region,\u00a0Isaac Kofi Adu, Deputy Port Security Manager, Port of Tema, has said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u202fMr\u00a0Adu, speaking at a media forum powered by the Ghana Ports and\u00a0Harbours\u00a0Authority (GPHA), noted that over 90 per cent of global trade passed through seaports, making them attractive targets for\u00a0organised\u00a0arms traffickers.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cUnlike airports and land borders, ports allow the movement of large volumes of cargo, which can be exploited if security systems are weak,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

He explained that the Tema Port had intensified security through joint operations involving\u00a0the\u00a0Customs, the Navy, the Marine Police, the Immigration\u00a0Service,\u00a0and other agencies.\u00a0<\/p>\n

These measures include quarterly joint security meetings, patrols at anchorage, joint cargo inspections, random checks on vessels and personnel, and the deployment of sniffer dogs trained to detect weapons and humans.\u00a0<\/p>\n

He said GPHA was upgrading port infrastructure, including introducing biometric gate systems to better control entry and exit points.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are especially alert to vessels that dock without cargo, as such movements can be used for illegal exchanges,\u201d\u00a0Mr\u00a0Adu said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u202fMr\u00a0Adu stressed that while Customs leads cargo scanning and inspections, port security personnel play a crucial role in detecting suspicious concealments and alerting preventive units.\u00a0<\/p>\n

He called for sustained investment in scanning technology and intelligence-sharing to close security gaps and protect Ghana\u2019s ports from being exploited by arms trafficking networks.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
