An\u00a0Adenta\u00a0Circuit Court has remanded a staff member of the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) into police custody over the alleged theft of a tugboat valued at $500,000.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Prince Edwin Brem, 47, who is also\u00a0a businessman, has been charged with defrauding by false\u00a0pretences\u00a0and forgery of stamps.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

The court is expected to take his plea on the next adjourned date.\u00a0<\/p>\n

When the case was called last Thursday, Brem was absent, prompting the court to issue a bench warrant for his arrest.\u00a0<\/p>\n

He later appeared before the court and was remanded into lawful custody by the presiding judge,\u00a0Ms\u00a0Angela\u00a0Attachie.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Chief Inspector Maxwell\u00a0Lanyo\u00a0led the prosecution.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The prosecution said the complainant,\u00a0Mr\u00a0Kofi Kuwada, a resident of\u00a0Aflao\u00a0in the Volta Region, is the owner of the tugboat, MV\u00a0Ebenezer, while Brem\u00a0resides\u00a0at Tema Community Two.\u00a0<\/p>\n

According to the prosecution, on September 1, 2025, at about\u00a00840 hours,\u00a0Kuwada\u00a0reported the matter to the Tema Fishing Harbour Police Station with a ship charter agreement, alleging that Brem, on November 14, 2024, had presented himself as a director of a company known as\u00a0Clearsail\u00a0Shipping International Management Limited.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Brem was said to have entered into an agreement to charter the tugboat, valued at US$500,000, for a period of three months.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

The charter period expired on February 24, 2025, but the tugboat was not returned.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The prosecution said Brem signed the charter agreement and stamped it with what he claimed was the official company stamp, thereby creating the impression that he had lawful authority to act on behalf of the company.\u00a0<\/p>\n

All efforts by\u00a0Kuwada\u00a0to retrieve the tugboat were unsuccessful, leading to a formal complaint to the police.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Investigations led the police to engage\u00a0Mr.\u00a0Boniface Acheampong, a director of\u00a0Clearsail\u00a0Shipping International Management Limited, who\u00a0stated\u00a0that neither he nor the other director had\u00a0authorised\u00a0Brem to sign the agreement.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Mr.\u00a0Acheampong\u00a0also\u00a0indicated\u00a0that the stamp used by Brem was neither sanctioned nor\u00a0recognised\u00a0by the company.\u00a0<\/p>\n

On September 5, 2025, Brem reported to the Tema Police, where he was arrested.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

During investigations, he admitted chartering the tugboat and promised to return it but\u00a0failed to\u00a0do so.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Police intelligence later revealed that the tugboat was in Guinea-Bissau.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

While arrangements were being made for its return to Ghana, Brem allegedly ordered the vessel, without the complainant\u2019s consent and contrary to police directives, to sail to The Gambia and\u00a0subsequently\u00a0to North American waters.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cIt has become clear that\u00a0the accused\u00a0has no intention of returning the boat to the owner,\u201d the facts before the court\u00a0stated.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
