Problems of indiscipline, illegal mining and poor governance in the country persist because political leaders are obsessed with power instead of the country, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey has said, calling for his party to lead \u201cquantum shifts\u201d.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) stated that \u201cthe endemic pervasive indiscipline\u201d and \u201csense of irresponsibility\u201d in the country\u2019s politics must be addressed to put the country on a developmental trajectory.<\/p>\n

He blamed multi-party democracy for creating a \u201cdoorway for absolute indiscipline\u201d because leaders fear losing power if they enforce rules.<\/p>\n

\u201cMembers would say if you crack the whip, you lose power. So we become obsessed with keeping power while seeing our country go down. Because all that matters now is winning against everything,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

NDC anniversary<\/h2>\n

Mr Kwetey was speaking at the party\u2019s 34th Anniversary celebration in Accra yesterday.<\/p>\n

Present at the event were other top party officers, including the Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah; the Majority Leader in Parliament, Mahama Ayariga; the NDC MP for Klottey Korle, Dr Zanetor Agyemang-Rawlings; the Members of Parliament (MP) for Krachi West, Helen Adjoa Ntoso; party cadres and sympathisers.<\/p>\n

It also featured flag raising and cake cutting to commemorate the anniversary of the party that birthed the Fourth Republic.\u00a0<\/p>\n

One-term presidency<\/h2>\n

The General Secretary proposed a \u201cone mandate non-renewal\u201d presidential term to free leaders from re-election fears.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you don\u2019t have to be afraid of being re-elected, you do what you\u2019ve got to do for your country.<\/p>\n

But the very moment you are constantly thinking, I need to go for election again, that\u2019s where the fear comes,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n

He said the multi-party system has created a \u201cmessianic\u201d expectation that political parties will solve every problem, destroying personal responsibility.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have fed our people with that mentality that we are messiahs.<\/p>\n

Why should I do anything?<\/p>\n

After all, the government should come and do it for me,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Stewardship<\/h2>\n

The MP for Klottey Korle and daughter of the Founder of the NDC, Dr Zanetor Agyemang-Rawlings, called on the NDC as a party in government to ensure equitable access to resources and to promote humility among those in positions of authority, because \u201call such persons are stewards, all such persons are servants of the people.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dr Agyemang-Rawlings said poverty leaves citizens with no option but \u201cinstant gratification,\u201d and the party must be mindful of that as it governs.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have a duty, especially now that the NDC is in power, to ensure equitable access and distribution of resources, to ensure humility of persons who have been placed in positions of authority,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

She added that the party must reflect how it governs, as Ghanaians always raised the bar when the NDC is in office, because it is the standard that the party established for itself 34 years ago.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Constitutional review\u00a0
\u00a0<\/h3>\n

On the ongoing discussions about the 1992 Constitution, Dr Agyemang-Rawlings said she aligns with the view that \u201cthe problem is not the Constitution, it\u2019s the way people are choosing to interpret it, and it\u2019s the way people are choosing not to align with the principles of good governance.\u201d<\/p>\n

She argued that it did not matter how many new constitutions the state came up with, if the mindset of the people is that \u201cthis is democracy and you can do anything you want and there are no consequences, there will be no point to any of that\u201d.<\/p>\n

She appealed for \u201cdeep and broad stakeholder engagement\u201d in any constitutional review, insisting that youth, women\u2019s groups, fisherfolk, farmers and traders must all be consulted.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
