A man,\u00a026,\u00a0popularly known as\u00a0Efutu,\u00a0and\u00a0unemployed, was\u00a0on\u00a0Thursday morning\u00a0burned to death\u00a0in a suspected arson attack\u00a0in a ghetto,\u00a0at\u00a0Assin\u00a0Fosu.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The incident occurred when fire swept through his wooden structure in the early hours of\u00a0the day.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

His charred body was discovered after firefighters and police responded to a distress call from residents around 0700 hours.<\/p>\n

Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Rosemond Duncan,\u00a0Assin\u00a0Fosu\u00a0District Crime Officer, said personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service were called in to extinguish the blaze, but the structure had already been destroyed\u00a0when\u00a0they arrived.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Some residents suspected foul play, alleging that a group of mechanics in the area had previously threatened to burn\u00a0Efutu\u00a0alive or evict him from the structure, accusing him of stealing from their shops.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s\u00a0no surprise. The fitters warned they would burn him or drive him out.\u00a0That\u2019s\u00a0why we believe they intentionally set the place on fire,\u201d one resident claimed.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Others, however,\u00a0believed\u00a0the fire may have been accidental as they\u00a0recounted that\u00a0Efutu\u00a0was seen earlier behaving erratically while smoking, raising the possibility that a discarded cigarette might have started the fire.<\/p>\n

Tensions flared after the incident when some angry youth, believed to be friends of the deceased, confronted the police with sticks and clubs, demanding the immediate arrest of the mechanics.\u00a0<\/p>\n

To prevent further unrest, the District Police requested reinforcement from the Regional Command, the Divisional Police, and the Formed Police Unit (FPU).\u00a0<\/p>\n

ASP Duncan confirmed that the body had\u00a0been deposited at the St Francis Xavier Hospital morgue in\u00a0Assin\u00a0Fosu\u00a0with\u00a0investigations ongoing to\u00a0establish\u00a0the exact cause of the fire.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
