A political aide to former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has dismissed suggestions that the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) is rooting for President John Mahama\u2019s failure in order to regain power.<\/p>\n

According to Kofi Tonto, the NPP welcomes recent improvements in key economic indicators under the Mahama administration, including easing inflation, appreciation of the cedi, and reductions in fuel prices, noting that these gains benefit all Ghanaians.<\/p>\n

Speaking on JoyNews\u2019 <\/em><\/strong>The Pulse<\/em> on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, he stressed that the party\u2019s political fortunes are not dependent on the government\u2019s collapse.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are happy, because as the NPP, we don\u2019t need President Mahama to fail for us to come back to power. Ghanaians don\u2019t think in a binary way, that one has to fail for the other to succeed,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Mr Tonto argued that national progress must take precedence over partisan interests, insisting that the country cannot afford stagnation for political advantage.<\/p>\n

\u201cPresident Mahama can be successful. In fact, he must be successful for the benefit of all of us. Ghana cannot continue to lag behind. As a political party, we have no interest in wishing bad for President Mahama,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

He further maintained that even if the President records successes, voters still retain the right to choose a different leadership direction in future elections.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe want him to succeed because we believe that even in the face of his success, Ghanaians can still decide that, although you\u2019ve done well, going forward we need a leader whose vision transcends the ordinary,\u201d Mr Tonto said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
