Parents and caregivers of persons with disabilities in Agona\u00a0Nsaba\u00a0in the Central Region have appealed to the government to\u00a0establish\u00a0affordable rehabilitation\u00a0centres\u00a0and strengthen support systems to ease their caregiving burden.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The appeal was made during a meeting\u00a0organised\u00a0by the National Association of Parents and Caregivers of Persons with Disabilities. Participants shared\u00a0personal experiences, highlighting financial hardships and limited access to basic assistive devices for their children.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Ms\u00a0Sadatu\u00a0Amadu, a sibling of a person living with cerebral palsy, said caregiving responsibilities had significantly affected her education and work,\u00a0explaining\u00a0that her mother\u00a0was also living with a disability, while her sister had\u00a0given birth to a child with a disability, placing a heavy burden on her.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cMost of the time, when my mother needs to go somewhere, or my sister\u00a0has to\u00a0do something, I\u00a0have to\u00a0stop school or work to support them. It is\u00a0very challenging. Government support through rehabilitation\u00a0centres\u00a0and effective support systems will\u00a0make life much easier,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The president of the National Association of Parents and Caregivers of Persons with Disabilities, Hannah Awadzi, called for unity among parents of children with special needs to strengthen advocacy efforts.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWe need to form a formidable front and speak with one voice. We must be present at the policy\u00a0table so the government understands our concerns and\u00a0factors\u00a0them\u00a0into national policies,\u201d she\u00a0stated.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Mrs Awadzi also educated parents on existing government interventions, including the District Assembly Common Fund for Persons with Disabilities, inclusive education policies, and the Disability Act. <\/p>\n

She encouraged parents to empower themselves with knowledge to better advocate for the rights and welfare of their children.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
