The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has firmly rejected any attempt to recognise Somaliland as an independent state.<\/p>\n

He restated that the African Union\u2019s unwavering commitment is to the unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Somalia.<\/p>\n

In a press release issued on December 26, the AU Commission Chair said he had taken note, with deep concern, of recent developments relating to Somaliland, warning that any move to recognise it would violate core principles of the continental body.<\/p>\n

Mr Youssouf reaffirmed the African Union\u2019s long-standing and consistent position, which is rooted in the Constitutive Act of the African Union, particularly the principle of respecting borders inherited at independence. <\/p>\n

He recalled the 1964 decision of the Organisation of African Unity, which affirmed the inviolability of Africa\u2019s colonial borders as a foundation for peace and stability on the continent.<\/p>\n

The AU Commission Chair stressed that Somaliland remains an integral part of the Federal Republic of Somalia and said any initiative aimed at recognising it as an independent entity is firmly rejected by the African Union.<\/p>\n

According to him, efforts to undermine Somalia\u2019s unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity run directly against the fundamental principles of the African Union. <\/p>\n

He warned that such actions also risk setting a dangerous precedent with far-reaching consequences for peace, security and stability across Africa.<\/p>\n

Mr Youssouf reiterated the African Union\u2019s full and unwavering support for Somalia, including ongoing efforts by Somali authorities to consolidate peace, strengthen state institutions and advance inclusive governance.<\/p>\n

The statement underscores the African Union\u2019s position that Africa\u2019s stability depends on respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, and that any unilateral moves threatening these principles will not be supported by the continental body.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
