Ukraine\u2019s Volodymyr Zelensky has said he will meet US President Donald Trump in Florida over the weekend, as talks continue ending Russia\u2019s full-scale war.<\/p>\n

Zelensky said he expected the meeting to take place on Sunday and to focus on a US-brokered 20-point peace plan, as well as separate proposals for US security guarantees.<\/p>\n

However, in a sign of the gulf between Moscow and Kyiv, a senior Russian official said that the plan was \u201cradically different\u201d to the one it was negotiating with Washington.<\/p>\n

Russia has spoken of \u201cslow but steady progress\u201d in talks, but has not commented on Zelensky\u2019s offer to withdraw troops from the eastern Donbas if Russia pulls back too.<\/p>\n

Ukraine has sought to secure guarantees from the US as part of a deal, and Zelensky has suggested that a demilitarised \u201cfree economic zone\u201d is a potential option for areas of Donbas that Russia has failed to take by force.<\/p>\n

On Friday, Zelensky told reporters that the 20-point plan was 90% complete: \u201cOur task is to make sure everything is 100% ready.\u201d<\/p>\n

He wrote on social media: \u201cWe are not losing a single day. We have agreed on a meeting at the highest level \u2013 with President Trump in the near future. A lot can be decided before the new year.\u201d<\/p>\n

But in\u00a0an interview with Politico\u00a0published on Friday, Trump said his Ukrainian counterpart \u201cdoesn\u2019t have anything until I approve it\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think it\u2019s going to go good with him. I think it\u2019s going to go good with [Vladimir] Putin,\u201d Trump said.<\/p>\n

He also said he expects to speak with the Russian leader \u201csoon\u201d.<\/p>\n

Trump also told Politico that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu would visit him in the coming days.<\/p>\n

Putin\u2019s senior aides have held further phone talks with US officials, following the return of Kremlin envoy Kirill Dmitriev from a meeting in Florida last weekend.<\/p>\n

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov was optimistic about the latest developments, but accused Ukraine of trying to \u201ctorpedo\u201d talks on the US plan.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think December 25, 2025, will remain in all our memories as a milestone when we truly came close to a solution. But whether we can make the final push and reach an agreement depends on our work and the political will of the other side,\u201d he said in comments to Russian state TV on Friday.<\/p>\n

Shortly after details of Zelensky\u2019s imminent visit to Florida emerged, the mayor of Ukraine\u2019s major northeastern city, Kharkiv, said two people had been killed and several others wounded in a Russian air strike.<\/p>\n

Ukrainian soldiers were pictured eating a Christmas meal together as fighting continued along the front line<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Zelensky has met Trump several times this year, since an initial White House meeting in February\u00a0descended into a hostile shouting match. Their most recent meeting at the White House in October was far more amicable.<\/p>\n

Confirmation of planned top-level talks came after the Ukrainian leader said he had spoken to Trump\u2019s chief negotiators, special envoy Steve Witkoff and son-in-law Jared Kushner, for an hour over the phone on Christmas Day.<\/p>\n

He said the latest round of negotiations had\u00a0generated \u201cnew ideas\u201d on how to end the war, and described it as a \u201creally good conversation\u201d.<\/p>\n

The White House has proposed establishing what would in effect be a demilitarised zone in eastern Ukraine where both sides agree not to deploy troops \u2013 a compromise that would avoid settling the intractable question of legal ownership over the contested territory.<\/p>\n

Zelensky signalled on Wednesday that if Ukraine were to pull back by up to 40km (25 miles) from the front line in the east to create an economic zone, then Russia would have to do the same from Russian-occupied parts of Ukraine\u2019s industrial heartland in the Donbas.<\/p>\n

Ukraine has secured several changes to an earlier 28-point draft plan, which was formulated by Steve Witkoff but widely seen as favourable to Russia.<\/p>\n

Zelensky told reporters on Friday that the weekend talks in Florida would focus on several documents, including US security guarantees and a separate economic agreement.<\/p>\n

However, Zelensky has repeatedly said that the question of territory has proved the most challenging issue to resolve, along with the future of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant.<\/p>\n

The White House has proposed that Ukraine and Russia split the energy generated by the plant, the largest in Europe. Russian troops currently control it.<\/p>\n

Russia is unlikely to agree to several points in the updated US plan, especially its territorial proposals. Foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova accused \u201cgroups of states, primarily Western European\u201d of seeking to derail the diplomatic progress that had been made.<\/p>\n

Putin has demanded complete control of Donbas, including 25% of the Donetsk region that it has not occupied.<\/p>\n

Zelensky outlined the latest version of the plan this week, the first time since the original 28-point draft was leaked in November.<\/p>\n

Latest proposals commit the US and Europe to providing security guarantees modelled on Nato\u2019s Article 5, which would commit allies to provide military support in the event of a renewed Russian invasion.<\/p>\n

The deal would also see Ukraine\u2019s military maintained at 800,000 personnel, a level the Kremlin has demanded be cut.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, fighting and aerial strikes have continued, with casualties in the central city of Uman as well as Ukraine\u2019s second biggest city, Kharkiv.<\/p>\n

Ukraine\u2019s air force said on Friday it had shot down 73 drones overnight.<\/p>\n

Russia also said it had shot down Ukrainian drones and missiles, including British Storm Shadows. Ukraine\u2019s air force said it had struck oil and gas refineries in Rostov and Krasnodar.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
