Rapper\u00a0Nicki Minaj\u00a0on Sunday made a surprise appearance at a\u00a0gathering of conservatives in Arizona\u00a0that was memorialising late activist\u00a0Charlie Kirk, and used her time on stage to praise President\u00a0Donald Trump\u00a0and Vice President\u00a0JD Vance, calling them \u201crole models\u201d for young men.<\/p>\n

The rap star was interviewed at Turning Point USA\u2019s AmericaFest convention by\u00a0Erika Kirk, the widow of Charlie Kirk, about her newfound support for Trump \u2014 someone she had condemned in the past \u2014 and about her actions denouncing violence against Christians in Nigeria.<\/p>\n

The Grammy-nominated rapper\u2019s recent alignment with the Make America Great Again movement has caught some interest because of her past criticism of Trump, even when the artist\u2019s own political ideology had been difficult to pin down. <\/p>\n

But her appearance Sunday at the flagship event for the\u00a0powerful conservative youth organisation\u00a0may shore up her status as a MAGA acolyte.<\/p>\n

Minaj mocked California Gov.\u00a0Gavin Newsom, referring to him as New-scum, a nickname Trump gave him. Newsom, a Democrat, has 2028 prospects. <\/p>\n

Minaj expressed admiration for the Republican president and Vance, who received an endorsement from Erika Kirk despite the fact that he has not said whether he will run for president. Kirk took over as leader of Turning Point.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis administration is full of people with heart and soul, and they make me proud of them. Our vice president, he makes me \u2026 well, I love both of them,\u201d Minaj said. \u201cBoth of them have a very uncanny ability to be someone that you relate to.\u201d<\/p>\n

Minaj\u2019s appearance included an awkward moment when, in an attempt to praise Vance\u2019s political skills, she described him as an \u201cassassin.\u201d<\/p>\n

She paused, seemingly regretting her word choice, and after Kirk appeared to wipe a tear from one of her eyes, the artist put her hand over her mouth while the crowd murmured.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf the internet wants to clip it, who cares? I love this woman,\u201d said Erika Kirk, who became a widow when Charlie Kirk was assassinated in September.<\/p>\n

Last month, the rapper shared a message posted by Trump on his Truth Social network about potential actions to sanction Nigeria saying the government is failing to rein in\u00a0the persecution of Christians\u00a0in the West African country. Experts and residents say the violence that has long plagued Nigeria\u00a0isn\u2019t so simply explained.<\/p>\n

\u201cReading this made me feel a deep sense of gratitude. We live in a country where we can freely worship God,\u201d Minaj shared on X. She was then invited to speak at a panel at the U.S. mission to the United Nations along with U.S. Ambassador Mike Waltz and faith leaders.<\/p>\n

Minaj said she was tired of being \u201cpushed around,\u201d and she said that speaking your mind with different ideas is controversial because \u201cpeople are no longer using their minds.\u201d Kirk thanked Minaj for being \u201ccourageous,\u201d despite the backlash she is receiving from the entertainment industry for expressing support for Trump.<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t notice,\u201d Minaj said. \u201cWe don\u2019t even think about them.\u201d Kirk then said \u201cwe don\u2019t have time to. We\u2019re too busy building, right?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re the cool kids,\u201d Minaj said.<\/p>\n

The Trinidadian-born rapper is best known for her hits \u201cSuper Freaky Girl,\u201d \u201cAnaconda\u201d and \u201cStarships.\u201d She has been nominated for 12 Grammy Awards over the course of her career.<\/p>\n

In 2018, Minaj was one of several celebrities condemning Trump\u2019s\u00a0zero-tolerance\u00a0immigration policy that\u00a0split more than 5,000 children\u00a0from their families at the Mexico border. Back then, she shared her own story of arriving to the country at 5 years old, describing herself as an \u201cillegal immigrant.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is so scary to me. Please stop this. Can you try to imagine the terror & panic these kids feel right now?\u201d she posted then on Instagram.<\/p>\n

On Sunday on stage with Erika Kirk, Minaj said, \u201cit\u2019s OK to change your mind.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
