MTN Mobile Money Limited will, from 2026, initiate a full re-registration of all MoMo agents across the country as part of new measures aimed at addressing the rising fraud within Ghana\u2019s digital payments ecosystem. <\/p>\n

This was disclosed by the Senior Manager for Commercial Mobile Money, Abdul-Majeed Rufai, during MTN\u2019s Regional Agents and Merchants Awards held in Kumasi on Tuesday, December 16, 2025.<\/p>\n

Rufai said the exercise has become necessary following a growing trend of agents operating with other people\u2019s details \u2014 a loophole he described as one of the major entry points for fraudulent activity on the platform.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have seen an increase in agents who are operating with other people\u2019s details. These agents are often the gateway for fraudulent transactions,\u201d he explained. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe re-registration will help us weed out illegitimate operators and ensure only bona fide agents remain on the network.\u201d<\/p>\n

The nationwide re-registration will run throughout 2026 and forms part of MTN\u2019s broader effort to strengthen customer safety and protect the integrity of mobile-money services. <\/p>\n

Fraud on digital-payment channels has become a national concern, with growing calls for stronger verification systems and better agent accountability.<\/p>\n

As part of the new measures, Mobile Money Limited will also introduce a revised cash-out process that replaces phone-number-based identification with a QR-code and agent-ID system<\/em>. Rufai said the new method is designed to reduce the exposure of personal information to fraudsters.<\/p>\n

\u201cFrom early 2026, every agent will receive a unique QR code and an agent ID,\u201d he noted. \u201cThis eliminates the exposure of personal numbers that fraudsters can exploit, and closes a major loophole scammers have used to intercept funds.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added that the QR-code approach aligns with emerging industry standards, as other networks in the country are beginning to adopt similar systems to protect customers.<\/p>\n

Rufai encouraged MoMo agents and merchants to cooperate with the new procedures, insisting that strengthening security is the shared responsibility of all stakeholders.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is the best way to safeguard the MoMo business and protect our customers,\u201d he said. \u201cWe are confident that, together, we can create a cleaner, more secure environment for everyone who uses mobile money in Ghana.\u201d<\/p>\n

The awards ceremony also recognised over 200 agents and merchants from the Ashanti, Bono, Bono East and Ahafo regions for their contribution to MTN\u2019s financial-inclusion agenda. Honorees received cash prizes, citations and other rewards to acknowledge their role in supporting the growth of mobile-money services.<\/p>\n

General Manager for MTN\u2019s Northern Business District, Nii Adotey Mingle, commended security agencies \u2014 especially the Ghana Police Service \u2014 for their efforts in protecting MoMo agents from robbery attacks, even though such incidents persist.<\/p>\n

He also reminded agents that MTN \u201cwill never call to demand personal details or a MoMo PIN,\u201d urging the public to stay vigilant against fraudsters.<\/p>\n

Award recipients expressed gratitude to MTN Ghana for the recognition and pledged to continue supporting the expansion of digital financial services nationwide.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
