From January 1, 2026, the Ghana Card will become mandatory for the purchase and renewal of motor and other insurance products in the country.<\/p>\n

The new requirement was announced in a notice issued by the National Insurance Commission (NIC), which JoyBusiness has sighted.<\/p>\n

According to the Commission, all customers will be required to present a valid Ghana Card before completing any insurance transaction. <\/p>\n

Corporate clients will also be required to provide their Tax Identification Number when undertaking motor insurance transactions.<\/p>\n

The NIC said the move is aimed at improving claims handling and strengthening Know Your Customer and Anti-Money Laundering measures within the insurance industry. <\/p>\n

The Commission believes the directive will also help reduce fraud and align Ghana\u2019s insurance sector with global financial services standards.<\/p>\n

The development suggests the insurance industry is aligning with similar measures introduced by the Bank of Ghana, which require the Ghana Card for deposits and other financial transactions.<\/p>\n
