Manchester United captain Bruno \u200cFernandes said his side failed to apply enough pressure and adopted \u2060a \u201cmood of defeat\u201d \u2060after conceding early in Wednesday\u2019s 4\u20131 Champions League loss at Como, a result that increased scrutiny on manager Michael Carrick.<\/p>\n

Como opened the scoring \u2060in the second minute, and United collapsed, with only a stoppage-time consolation goal from Joshua Zirkzee making the scoreline slightly less severe.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe started on the wrong \u2060foot, and they scored very early,\u201d Fernandes told TNT Sports. \u201cThere was not enough pressure on the ball and not many good movements off the ball. There were many things not going our way.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a decision from the [coaching] staff not to press man-to-man \u200cand sometimes leave space behind and try to get the ball, wait for them, but sometimes when you give space to these teams they get confidence,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Asked if his comments amounted to criticism of Carrick\u2019s tactics, Fernandes said: \u201cThat\u2019s on the manager and staff to see, not me.<\/p>\n

\u201cSometimes you have to be more brave under pressure, take the risk of pressing high and \u2060making them uncomfortable.\u201d<\/p>\n

Carrick has come under increasing pressure with \u2060United now winless in seven matches.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was more than disappointing,\u201d the 45-year-old manager told TNT Sports. \u201cI think everybody\u2019s got to take responsibility for that. I\u2019ll take responsibility for the overall team and performance; it stops with me, and I\u2019m fine with that.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut as a supporter of this football club, to see a \u2060performance like that is unacceptable, I have to \u2060say.\u201d<\/p>\n

Carrick said his side had failed to show the required intensity.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s the motivation and the purpose and the intensity of a game of football that you have to bring. We didn\u2019t bring that today,\u201d \u200che said. \u201cI\u2019ve got to apologise for the performance.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fernandes also questioned United\u2019s mentality after the early setback.<\/p>\n

\u201cConceding early makes us go into the game with a mood \u200cof \u200cdefeat,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

United have three points from their opening three Champions League matches and host AS Roma in their next fixture in the competition.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n
