Venezuela has told international airlines to resume flights to the country within 48 hours or risk being stripped of their clearance to fly there altogether.<\/p>\n

Several airlines suspended their flights to Venezuela after the US aviation regulator warned on Friday of \u201cheightened military activity\u201d in the area.<\/p>\n

The warning came as the US ramped up pressure on the Venezuelan government, sending\u00a0the world\u2019s largest aircraft carrier\u00a0to the southern Caribbean as part of a larger military build-up.<\/p>\n

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has warned Venezuela\u2019s aviation authority that rescinding airlines\u2019 clearance would only isolate the country further.<\/p>\n

Venezuela\u2019s aviation authority (Inac), which reports to the country\u2019s ministry of transport, issued the ultimatum on Monday.<\/p>\n

Among the airlines affected are Spain\u2019s Iberia, Air Europa and Plus Ultra, Brazil\u2019s Gol, Chile\u2019s Latam, Colombia\u2019s Avianca, Portugal\u2019s TAP and Turkish Airlines.<\/p>\n

All of them \u2013 except Trinidad and Tobago\u2019s Caribbean Airlines, which had already stopped flights in September \u2013 halted their flights to Venezuela after the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued a \u201cNotice to Air Missions\u201d on Friday.<\/p>\n

In it, the FAA advised flight operators \u201cto exercise caution when operating in the Maiquet\u00eda flight information region at all altitudes due to the worsening security situation and heightened military activity in and around Venezuela\u201d.<\/p>\n

Maiquet\u00eda is the location of Venezuela\u2019s main international airport, serving the capital, Caracas.<\/p>\n

While a number of airlines, including Panama\u2019s Copa and Venezuela\u2019s state-owned Conviasa, have continued to fly in and out of Maiquet\u00eda, the suspensions have severely curtailed the number of international flights.<\/p>\n

Aviation industry body Iata urged Inac to drop the deadline, to avoid further reducing \u201cconnectivity to the country, which is already one of the least connected in the region\u201d.<\/p>\n

Iata stressed\u00a0in a statement\u00a0that its member airlines had suspended their flights temporarily and remained \u201ccommitted to restoring operations to and from Venezuela as soon as conditions allow\u201d.<\/p>\n

Tension between the US and Venezuela has been growing since the former escalated its military presence in the southern Caribbean, in an operation it says is designed to combat drug trafficking.<\/p>\n

The US Navy has carried out at least 21 strikes against boats allegedly carrying drugs \u2013 mostly in the Caribbean but also a few in the Pacific \u2013 since the beginning of September.<\/p>\n

The Venezuelan president, Nicol\u00e1s Maduro, has denounced the strikes and the military build-up, accusing the US of trying to overthrow him.<\/p>\n

On Monday, he struck a defiant note telling viewers of his TV show that \u201cthey [the US] will not be able to defeat Venezuela, we are invincible\u201d.<\/p>\n

The US government has labelled Maduro as an illegitimate leader, pointing to his 2024 re-election, which was widely dismissed as rigged.<\/p>\n

However, US President Donald Trump has not ruled out speaking directly to Maduro, telling reporters last week that \u201cat a certain period of time, I\u2019ll be talking to him\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
