The UN Security Council has voted in favour of a US-drafted resolution, which endorses Donald Trump\u2019s 20-point plan for Gaza.<\/p>\n

Included in the plan is the establishment of an International Stabilisation Force (ISF), which the US says multiple unnamed countries have offered to contribute to.<\/p>\n

The resolution was backed by 13 countries \u2013 including the UK, France and Somalia \u2013 with none voting against the proposal. Russia and China abstained.<\/p>\n

Hamas, reacting to the move, rejected the resolution and said it failed to meet Palestinians\u2019 rights and demands.<\/p>\n

According to reports on the latest draft, part of the ISF\u2019s role would be to work on the \u201cpermanent decommissioning of weapons from non-state armed groups\u201d \u2013 including Hamas \u2013 as well as protecting civilians and humanitarian aid routes.<\/p>\n

This would require Hamas to hand over its weapons \u2013 something it is meant to do under Trump\u2019s peace plan.<\/p>\n

\u201cAssigning the international force with tasks and roles inside the Gaza Strip, including disarming the resistance, strips it of its neutrality, and turns it into a party to the conflict in favour of the occupation,\u201d the group said in a statement following the Security Council\u2019s vote.<\/p>\n

As well as authorising an ISF, which it says would work with Israel and Egypt \u2013 Gaza\u2019s southern neighbour \u2013 the draft also calls for creation of a newly trained Palestinian police in Gaza. Until now, the police there have operated under the authority of Hamas.<\/p>\n

Mike Waltz, the US\u2019s ambassador to the UN, told the Council that the ISF would be \u201ctasked with securing the area, supporting the demilitarization of Gaza, dismantling the terrorist infrastructure, removing weapons, and ensuring the safety of Palestinian civilians\u201d.<\/p>\n

The initial phase of the plan \u2013 a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas and the handing over of hostages and detainees \u2013 came into force on 10 October.<\/p>\n

Waltz described it as a \u201cfragile, fragile first step\u201d.<\/p>\n

The draft also raises the possibility of a Palestinian state \u2013 something Israel strongly opposes.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
