The\u00a0Ghana\u00a0AIDS\u00a0Commission\u00a0(GAC)\u00a0is set to roll out the implementation of\u00a0a\u00a0National HIV Prevention Policy in 2026,\u00a0Dr\u00a0Kharmacelle\u00a0Prosper\u00a0Akanbong, the Director General of the\u00a0Commission, has announced.<\/p>\n

He said the policy implementation had innovative strategies of Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) and Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) that targeted key vulnerable populations, including Adolescent Girls and Young Women, as well as Adolescent Boys and Young Men.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Dr\u00a0Akanbong\u00a0said this when speaking at an integrated medical outreach campaign in Sunyani hosted by the First Lady,\u00a0Mrs\u00a0Lordina\u00a0Dramani\u00a0Mahama, explaining that the National Condom and Lubricants Strategy would also be implemented.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The office of the First\u00a0Lady,\u00a0in collaboration with the GAC and the Bono Regional Coordinating Council,\u00a0organised\u00a0the media outreach to promote early detection and prevention of HIV among adolescents and the wider community.\u00a0<\/p>\n

It\u00a0sought\u00a0to strengthen access to integrated health services tailored to the needs of young people and mothers, as well as raise awareness about healthy\u00a0behaviours\u00a0and preventive care.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Dr\u00a0Akanbong\u00a0explained that the execution of the lubricant strategy aimed at bringing essential services closer to vulnerable populations at the point of need, saying the Bono\u00a0Region\u00a0was selected for the medical outreach because\u00a0it\u00a0ranked among the highest HIV burden regions in the country.\u00a0<\/p>\n

He said 2024 National and Sub-national HIV Estimates and Projections placed\u00a0the region\u2019s HIV prevalence rate at 2.22 percent, significantly above the national average of 1.49 percent.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Dr\u00a0Akanpong\u00a0said community outreach initiatives like\u00a0the medical\u00a0outreach brought healthcare closer to the people.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Bono Regional Minister,\u00a0Joseph\u00a0Addae\u00a0Akwaboa, noted that medical outreach remained crucial in strengthening public health and combating HIV and AIDS.\u00a0<\/p>\n

He said recent data\u00a0indicated\u00a0that the region continued to record a\u00a0significant number\u00a0of new HIV and AIDS infections and stressed the need to intensify awareness creation, promoting early testing, and reinforcing shared commitment to safeguarding the health of the people.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Mr\u00a0Akwaboa\u00a0said that: \u201cThe medical outreach reflects the government\u2019s broader commitment to strengthening public health systems, achieving universal health coverage, and working toward the global goal of an HIV-free generation.\u201d<\/p>\n

There was also\u00a0an extensive\u00a0public education on nutrition, condom use, and family planning services.<\/p>\n

The beneficiaries received free health services, including HIV testing\u00a0and\u00a0counselling, as well as screening for\u00a0Malaria, Tuberculosis,\u00a0Cervical\u00a0Cancer,\u00a0Hepatitis B,\u00a0Diabetes,\u00a0Blood\u00a0Pressure, Breast Cancer, and Syphilis.<\/p>\n
