There is no genocide in northern Nigeria, the African Union Commission chairperson said on Wednesday, rejecting accusations by U.S. President\u00a0Donald Trump\u00a0that \u201cvery large numbers\u201d of Christians were being\u00a0killed\u00a0in Africa\u2019s most populous country.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s going on in the northern part of Nigeria has nothing to do with the kind of atrocities we see in Sudan or in some part of eastern DRC,\u201d Mahmoud Ali Youssouf told reporters at the United Nations in New York, referring to the Democratic Republic of Congo.<\/p>\n

\u201cThink twice before\u2026 making such statements,\u201d he said. \u201cThe first victims of Boko Haram are Muslims, not Christians.\u201d<\/p>\n

The extremist Islamist armed group Boko Haram has also terrorised northeast Nigeria, an insurgency that has killed tens of thousands of people over the past 15 years. Human rights experts have said most Boko Haram victims have been Muslims.<\/p>\n

Trump earlier this month said he has\u00a0asked the Defence Department\u00a0to prepare for possible \u201cfast\u201d military action if Nigeria fails to crack down on the killing of Christians. He did not provide any specific evidence for his accusation.<\/p>\n

He also threatened to \u201cstop all aid and assistance to Nigeria, and may very well go into that now disgraced country, \u2018guns-a-blazing,\u2019 to completely wipe out the Islamic Terrorists who are committing these horrible atrocities.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nigeria\u2019s Foreign Ministry has said the country would\u00a0keep fighting\u00a0violent extremism and that it hoped Washington would remain a close ally, saying it \u201cwill continue to defend all citizens, irrespective of race, creed, or religion.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nigeria, which has 200 ethnic groups practising Christianity, Islam and traditional religions, has a long history of peaceful coexistence. <\/p>\n

But it has also seen flare-ups of violence among groups, often exacerbated by ethnic divisions or conflict over scarce resources.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
