A comedian and writer says he turned down a job interview after learning the questions would be coming from Artificial Intelligence (AI).<\/p>\n

Richard Stott, from Beverley, East Yorkshire, said he had applied for a freelance copywriting role but turned down the interview after he was told it would be \u201cled by AI\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt didn\u2019t sit well so I told them if interviewing in person wasn\u2019t worth their time then the role wasn\u2019t worth mine and I left it,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) said employers need to \u201cstrike the right balance between AI and human interaction when hiring\u201d.<\/p>\n

Mr Stott, who is a freelancer, voiced his concerns about the AI interview on social media and said he received \u201cunanimous support\u201d from people saying it was \u201cnot a good idea\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt felt disrespectful that they weren\u2019t willing to put time into speaking to candidates,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you\u2019re going into a company or team personality is important and you can\u2019t quantify that in data, so to have AI remove that seems counterintuitive.\u201d<\/p>\n

Despite this, Mr Stott said AI \u201ccan be fantastic\u201d when used correctly, such as taking away jobs that are laborious.<\/p>\n

\u201cNot everyone can turn down a job interview but if they\u2019re using AI and enough of us say no then it won\u2019t take off,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

\u2018One-way train\u2019<\/h2>\n

Luke Bottomley, 37, director at James Ray Recruitment in East Yorkshire, said AI was becoming \u201cincreasingly important\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think AI will be something that needs to be integrated into business or they will be left behind.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s on a one-way train at the moment and everyone needs to be looking at it.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat said, when it comes to the human element, I don\u2019t think it will be replaced.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mr Bottomley explained that using AI for job applications would mean that businesses \u201cwill miss out on potentially exceptional candidates\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cHaving a one-to-one interview gives the chance to know an individual and what they can bring to a role, you can\u2019t get that through a robot,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Hayfa Mohdzaini, senior technology adviser at CIPD, which is the professional body for HR and people development, said: \u201cEmployers need to strike the right balance between AI and human interaction when hiring and consider candidate preferences so that they don\u2019t miss out on great talent.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhile an AI chatbot might be a cost-effective option for an employer, it might put off some candidates from applying.<\/p>\n

\u201cEmployers should tell candidates upfront when AI will be used and explain how it will benefit them.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
