The Convenor of the One Ghana Movement, Senyo Hosi, says the recent violent confrontation at Hwidiem in the Ahafo Region is the ultimate test of President John Dramani Mahama\u2019s political will to combat illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Speaking on the AM Show on JoyNews, Mr Hosi said President Mahama\u2019s handling of the incident \u2014 particularly if it involves individuals connected to his political party \u2014 will reveal whether his administration is truly serious about ending the long-standing menace.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is the biggest test. The President himself said he needed to deal with the kingpins, and I agree with him strategically \u2014 you kill the snake at the head, not chip off the skin. But it\u2019s been ten months, and we\u2019ve not seen the kingpins yet. These are the kingpins, Mr President,\u201d Mr Hosi said.<\/p>\n

He cautioned that if the President fails to take decisive action against those behind the Hwidiem disturbances, it will send a clear message that the government\u2019s fight against illegal mining lacks sincerity.<\/p>\n

\u201cHis ability to deal with his own people will be a sign of his real commitment. If he can\u2019t do that ruthlessly, then there\u2019s no hope. At that point, we\u2019ll take our decision and demand accountability,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

The remarks come after violent clashes between some youth and members of the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) at the Hwidiem Police Station over the weekend. <\/p>\n

The confrontation, which reportedly led to the vandalisation of vehicles, including the Hwidiem Zongo Chief\u2019s vehicle, has reignited debate about the government\u2019s approach to illegal mining.<\/p>\n

Mr Hosi stressed that the country\u2019s future depends on strong leadership and the courage to confront vested interests fueling environmental destruction.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf we can\u2019t hold our leaders accountable on this, we risk losing not just our lands and water bodies but the future of our children,\u201d he warned.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
