Donald Trump has played down the possibility of a US war with Venezuela, but suggested Nicol\u00e1s Maduro\u2019s days as the country\u2019s president are numbered.<\/p>\n

Asked if the US was going to war against Venezuela, the US president told CBS\u2019 60 Minutes: \u201cI doubt it. I don\u2019t think so. But they\u2019ve been treating us very badly.\u201d<\/p>\n

His comments come as the US continues to launch strikes on alleged drug-smuggling boats in the Caribbean. The Trump administration says the strikes are necessary to stem the flow of drugs into the US.<\/p>\n

Trump rejected suggestions that the US action was not about stopping narcotics, but aimed at ousting Maduro, a long-time Trump opponent, saying it was about \u201cmany things\u201d.<\/p>\n

At least 64 people have been killed by US strikes in the Caribbean and eastern Pacific since early September, CBS News \u2013 the BBC\u2019s US news partner \u2013 reported.<\/p>\n

Speaking from his Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida, Trump said: \u201cEvery single boat that you see that\u2019s shot down kills 25,000 on drugs and destroys families all over our country.\u201d<\/p>\n

Pushed on whether the US was planning any strikes on land, Trump refused to rule it out, saying: \u201cI wouldn\u2019t be inclined to say that I would do that\u2026 I\u2019m not gonna tell you what I\u2019m gonna do with Venezuela, if I was gonna do it or if I wasn\u2019t going to do it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Maduro has previously accused Washington of \u201cfabricating a new war\u201d, while Colombian President Gustavo Petro has said the strikes on boats are being used by the US to \u201cdominate\u201d Latin America.<\/p>\n

Trump said the government was \u201cnot going to allow\u201d people \u201cfrom all over the world\u201d to come in.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey come in from the Congo, they come in from all over the world, they\u2019re coming, not just from South America. But Venezuela in particular \u2013 has been bad. They have gangs,\u201d he said, singling out Tren de Aragua.<\/p>\n

He called it \u201cthe most vicious gang anywhere in the world\u201d.<\/p>\n

President Trump was also asked about nuclear testing, after he called on US military leaders to resume testing nuclear weapons in order to keep pace with other countries such as Russia and China.<\/p>\n

Asked by CBS\u2019s Norah O\u2019Donnell if he planned for the US to detonate a nuclear weapon for the first time in more than 30 years, Trump said: \u201cI\u2019m saying that we\u2019re going to test nuclear weapons like other countries do, yes.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added: \u201cRussia\u2019s testing, and China\u2019s testing, but they don\u2019t talk about it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Russia and China have not carried out such tests since 1990 and 1996 respectively.<\/p>\n

Pressed further on the topic, Trump said: \u201cThey don\u2019t go and tell you about it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t want to be the only country that doesn\u2019t test,\u201d he said, adding North Korea and Pakistan to the list of nations allegedly testing their arsenals.<\/p>\n

Also on Sunday, Trump\u2019s energy secretary downplayed the idea that the US was planning to set off a nuclear explosion.<\/p>\n

Chris Wright said any tests would be \u201cnon-critical explosions\u201d on \u201cother parts of a nuclear weapon to make sure they deliver the appropriate geometry and they set up the nuclear explosion\u201d.<\/p>\n

During the interview, Trump also spoke about the US government shutdown, which has gone on for more than a month and left millions of Americans facing the loss of essential services.<\/p>\n

The president blamed Democrats, calling them \u201ccrazed lunatics\u201d who have \u201clost their way\u201d \u2013 but said he believed they will eventually capitulate and vote to end the shutdown.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd if they don\u2019t vote, that\u2019s their problem,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

It was Trump\u2019s first interview with CBS since he sued its parent company, Paramount, over a 2024 interview with then Vice-President Kamala Harris.<\/p>\n

He claimed the interview \u2013 which aired as part of the presidential election campaign \u2013 had been edited to \u201ctip the scales in favour of the Democratic Party\u201d.<\/p>\n

Paramount agreed to pay $16m (\u00a313.5m) to settle the suit, but with the money allocated to Trump\u2019s future presidential library, not paid to him \u201cdirectly or indirectly\u201d. It said the settlement did not include a statement of apology.<\/p>\n

Trump last appeared on the 60 Minutes programme in 2020, when he walked out of an interview with Lesley Stahl because he claimed the questions were biased. He did not agree to an interview with the show during the 2024 election.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
