Amazon has confirmed it plans to cut thousands of jobs, saying it needs to be \u201corganised more leanly\u201d to seize the opportunity provided by artificial intelligence (AI).<\/p>\n

The tech giant said on Tuesday it would reduce its global corporate workforce by \u201capproximately 14,000 roles\u201d.<\/p>\n

Earlier reporting had suggested it was planning to lay off as many as 30,000 workers.<\/p>\n

Beth Galetti, a senior vice president at Amazon,\u00a0wrote in a note to staff\u00a0that the move would make the company \u201ceven stronger\u201d by shifting resources \u201cto ensure we\u2019re investing in our biggest bets and what matters most to our customers\u2019 current and future needs\u201d.<\/p>\n

She acknowledged that some would question the move, given that the company was performing well.<\/p>\n

At the end of July, Amazon reported second-quarter results which beat Wall Street expectations on several counts, including a 13% year-over-year increase in sales to $167.7bn (\u00a3125bn).<\/p>\n

But Ms Galetti said the cuts were needed because AI was \u201cthe most transformative technology we\u2019ve seen since the Internet\u201d and was \u201cenabling companies to innovate much faster than ever before.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re convicted that we need to be organised more leanly, with fewer layers and more ownership, to move as quickly as possible for our customers and business,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n

The note, shared with Amazon employees earlier on Tuesday, said the company was \u201cworking hard to support everyone whose role is impacted\u201d \u2013 including by helping those affected find new roles within Amazon.<\/p>\n

Those who cannot will receive \u201ctransition support\u201d, including severance pay, it said.<\/p>\n

The BBC has asked if it will affect employees in the UK.<\/p>\n

The company has more than 1.5 million employees across its warehouses and offices worldwide.<\/p>\n

This includes around 350,000 corporate workers, including those in executive, managerial and sales roles,\u00a0according to figures\u00a0that Amazon submitted to the US government last year.<\/p>\n

Like many technology firms, Amazon hired aggressively during the COVID-19 pandemic to meet the surge in demand for online deliveries and digital services.<\/p>\n

Amazon boss Andy Jassy has since focused on reducing spending as the company invests heavily in AI tools to boost efficiency.<\/p>\n

Mr Jassy said in June that the increase in AI tools\u00a0will likely lead to job cuts\u00a0as machines take over routine tasks.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe will need fewer people doing some of the jobs that are being done today, and more people doing other types of jobs,\u201d he said then.<\/p>\n

\u2018Inevitable\u2019<\/h2>\n

Amazon has carried out several rounds of cuts to its corporate division in recent years.<\/p>\n

It laid off around 27,000 workers over several months in 2022,\u00a0as rivals similarly looked to reverse hiring increases made during the pandemic.<\/p>\n

After the company posted its latest financial results in July, its more subdued profit guidance for the forthcoming quarter left some sceptical of whether \u2013 or when \u2013 its enormous AI investments would pay off.<\/p>\n

Slower growth for its cloud business, Amazon Web Services (AWS), compared to rivals Microsoft and Google, also sparked concern among some investors.<\/p>\n

Amazon will report its latest results on Thursday for the period ending 30 September.<\/p>\n

Ben Barringer, technology analyst at Quilter Cheviot, said the wider industry would be watching Amazon closely as it embarked on its latest round of cuts.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are already seeing jobs in software development being shed thanks to the capabilities of some of these AI tools, and the big companies will be looking to redistribute and restructure their workforces accordingly,\u201d he told the BBC.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey have the data and can apply AI in a way that, unfortunately, means job losses are inevitable.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
