Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, says while the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) faced major challenges in office, it must not shy away from celebrating its achievements. <\/p>\n

The Effutu MP speaking on JoyNews\u2019 PM Express on October 27, said leadership must acknowledge both failures and successes.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes, we had an opportunity. We were faced with huge challenges. We tried, but we were not too successful,\u201d he admitted. <\/p>\n

He cited the fight against illegal mining and the global economic shocks from COVID-19 as examples of where government struggled. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe lost the middle class, our own base, the businessmen, because there was some haircut\u2026 pensioners, educated people who ordinarily would vote NPP got disappointed,\u201d he said, referencing the fallout from fiscal tightening measures.<\/p>\n

According to him, the discontent even affected those closely linked to the party. <\/p>\n

\u201cA former Chief Justice who was appointed by our own administration\u2026 was on the streets fighting for her pension. It\u2019s understandable,\u201d he noted. <\/p>\n

Despite these setbacks, Afenyo-Markin said the NPP\u2019s record remains strong and must be defended. <\/p>\n

\u201cI hold the view that, despite all these disappointments, we should still let the Ghanaian people know the good things we did. It\u2019s very important, and we shouldn\u2019t shy away from our success stories.\u201d<\/p>\n

He pointed to key social intervention programs as evidence of the NPP\u2019s transformative impact. <\/p>\n

\u201cIf you talk about Free SHS, you talk about 1D1F for the private sector, you talk about school feeding, you talk about the mass transport system, you talk about health insurance \u2014 these are major social intervention programs that changed lives,\u201d he stressed.<\/p>\n

Recalling his own background, he shared how a bursary from former Minister Dr Paa Kwesi Nduom saved his education. <\/p>\n

\u201cBut for Dr Paa Kwesi Nduom\u2019s bursary, I wouldn\u2019t have completed SHS in Saint Augustine\u2019s. My mom was out of work. My stepdad had been demoted because of politics. Things were bad,\u201d he recounted.<\/p>\n

He said the Free SHS policy, despite its criticisms, has opened opportunities for many Ghanaian families. <\/p>\n

\u201cToday, you look for a house help, a gardener, and they\u2019ll tell you they\u2019ve completed SHS. It wasn\u2019t the case before. Many homes, poor and rich, have benefited,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Mr Afenyo-Markin argued that the NPP\u2019s efforts in education, industrialisation, and social welfare have reshaped Ghana\u2019s development story. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe shouldn\u2019t be shy of our weakness. You come into government, you have your success story, you have your failings. But the good must be told,\u201d he emphasised.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
