US President Donald Trump has not ruled out the possibility of seeking a third term in the White House, saying he would \u201clove to do it\u201d.<\/p>\n

But Trump rejected the possibility of running for vice-president in 2028 \u2013 an idea floated by some supporters as a way for him to circumvent the US Constitution that bars the president from running for a third term.<\/p>\n

Speaking to reporters during his trip to Asia, Trump described the idea as \u201ctoo cute\u201d and said it \u201cwouldn\u2019t be right\u201d.<\/p>\n

It is unclear what method he would use to run again. Last week, former Trump strategist Steve Bannon said that a \u201cplan\u201d was in place to secure the 79-year-old president another term.<\/p>\n

Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One on his way to Japan from Malaysia, Trump said that while he would \u201cbe allowed\u201d to run again as vice-president, he had no plans to do so.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think people wouldn\u2019t like that,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s too cute. It wouldn\u2019t be right.\u201d<\/p>\n

Talking about the possibility of a third term, Trump said: \u201cI haven\u2019t really thought about it. But I have the best poll numbers that I\u2019ve ever had.\u201d<\/p>\n

Additionally, Trump also suggested Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio as potential successors, calling them \u201cunstoppable\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cAll I can tell you is that we have a great group of people, which they don\u2019t,\u201d he added, referring to Democrats.<\/p>\n

The 22nd Amendment of the U.S. Constitution bars presidents from seeking a third term.<\/p>\n

Repealing the amendment would require approval from two-thirds of both the House of Representatives and the Senate, or a constitutional convention called by two-thirds of state legislatures \u2013 a process viewed as highly unlikely.<\/p>\n

The amendment would also need to have the backing of 38 states to ratify it, or make it officially valid.<\/p>\n

Last week, former Trump adviser Steve Bannon \u2013 who remains a vocal supporter \u2013 claimed there was a \u201cplan\u201d to secure a third term for Trump.<\/p>\n

\u201cTrump is going to be president in \u201928, and people ought to just get accommodated with that,\u201d Bannon told The Economist. \u201cAt the appropriate time, we\u2019ll lay out what the plan is.\u201d<\/p>\n

In March, Trump told CNBC he would \u201cprobably not\u201d run again, though he later said he was \u201cnot joking\u201d about the possibility.<\/p>\n

It is still unclear which Democrats intend to run for the White House in 2028, although several have already expressed an interest.<\/p>\n

On Sunday, California Governor Gavin Newsom told CBS, the BBC\u2019s US partner, that he would \u201cbe lying\u201d if he said he was not giving serious thought to a presidential bid.<\/p>\n

Former vice-president\u00a0Kamala Harris also told the BBC\u00a0she may run again and that she could \u201cpossibly\u201d be president in the future.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
