According to the Auditor-General’s Report, a review of expenditure related to the continental sporting event revealed irregularities in billing for sanitation services. The report indicated that multiple invoices submitted for payment showed signs of duplication, while others covered similar services within the same time frames, raising questions about possible overbilling.
The audit findings specifically pointed to inconsistencies in the documentation supporting the payments, noting that some charges appeared to have been repeated across different invoices. In other instances, services billed overlapped, suggesting that the same work may have been charged for more than once.
The 13th African Games, hosted in Accra, required extensive sanitation and waste management services across various venues. However, the Auditor-General emphasized that despite the scale of operations, all payments must adhere strictly to financial regulations and procurement standards.
The report called for further investigation into the identified discrepancies and recommended that any overpayments be recovered. It also urged stricter verification processes to prevent similar occurrences in future public expenditures.
Authorities responsible for managing the Games’ finances are expected to respond to the findings, as accountability measures are enforced to safeguard public funds.
The Auditor-General reiterated the importance of transparency and due diligence in public financial management, particularly in large-scale events involving significant government spending.
