The decline is notable given the active conflict backdrop. Typically, military escalation drives investors toward safe-haven assets. This time, the metal has struggled to hold ground because the force usually behind gold rallies, the threat of sustained inflation, is itself weakening.
Analysts point directly to the oil market. Crude prices fell sharply over the past week before partially recovering on Tuesday, and lower energy costs have reduced fears of a conflict-driven inflation shock. As those fears ease, expectations that central banks will maintain prolonged tight monetary policy have also softened, diminishing demand for non-yielding assets like gold.
The precious metal now sits nearly 15% below levels recorded at the start of the current conflict, having pulled back substantially from a record high above $5,600 per ounce reached earlier in 2026. On a year-on-year basis, however, gold remains more than 37% higher, a figure that underscores how far prices climbed before the latest reversal.
The geopolitical picture continues to shift. US Central Command confirmed operations in southern Iran targeting missile launch sites and vessels suspected of mine-laying activity, with Washington citing the protection of American forces as the rationale. President Donald Trump said diplomatic talks with Tehran were advancing but warned that military action remained an option should negotiations break down.
Traders say gold is now consolidating within a defined range, waiting for clearer direction from the Federal Reserve on interest rates and from the Middle East on whether the conflict stabilises or escalates further.
Until one of those signals arrives with conviction, analysts expect precious metals markets to remain volatile, with prices sensitive to every shift in tone from either Washington or Tehran.
