Political figure and legal advocate Boakye Kyeremateng Agyarko has strongly condemned the reported arrest and detention of activists affiliated with the New Patriotic Party (NPP), describing the actions as a threat to democratic governance and freedom of expression in Ghana.
In a press release issued from his office in Odumase Krobo, Agyarko said he was “deeply concerned” by what he called the use of state power to suppress dissenting political opinions. He argued that the arrests undermine Ghana’s democratic values and violate constitutional protections for free speech.
Agyarko referenced Article 21(1)(a) of Ghana’s 1992 Constitution, which guarantees freedom of expression, and warned against what he described as a return to a “culture of silence.” He also criticized the use of criminal laws to target political opponents, saying that disagreements in a democracy should be addressed through debate rather than intimidation.
The former minister urged institutions including the Ghana Police Service, the National Peace Council, civil society organizations, and the media to defend democratic principles and prevent political tensions from escalating.
Among the key demands outlined in the statement were:
The immediate release or fair trial of detained activists,
An end to the criminalization of political dissent,
Greater government focus on economic challenges instead of political disputes.
Agyarko also called on President John Mahama and other state actors to safeguard democratic freedoms and ensure peace and stability in the country.
The statement concluded with a call for vigilance in defending Ghana’s democracy, describing the country as “a beacon of hope for democracy in Africa.”
The development comes amid heightened political tensions and ongoing debate over free speech, governance, and political accountability in Ghana.
