A policeman was on Monday stabbed by a suspected criminal at Lower McCarthy Hill in Accra.

The policeman, identified as Sammy, was accompanying his children to school when he was attacked suddenly by the suspect with a knife.

In an attempt to disarm the criminal, the policeman (Sammy) shot several times at close range at him, but the bullet did not hit the target, as the suspect was said to have fortified himself with some black power (juju).

It was after the failed attempt to subdue the suspect that he tried to take the pistol away from the policeman who held on to it firmly.

According to an eyewitness, it was in the ensuing struggle that the policeman was stabbed in the right rib, after which the suspect took to his heels.

The witness, Quartey, said the suspect lived with the mother in the area and was said to be a criminal, harassing residents.

“Sometimes he would come with some boys on motorbikes disturbing everybody,” he said.

Sammy, who survived the attack, is currently receiving treatment at the Police Hospital.

The police have confirmed the incident, saying that the matter is under investigation.

The Head of Public Affairs for the Accra Regional Police Command, Superintendent Juliana Obeng, confirmed the incident to Graphic Online’s Emmanuel Bonney.

Suspected killer of queen mother who was shot at Gbawe arrested, firearm recovered

The Accra Regional Police Command has arrested a 21-year-old man in connection with the shooting and killing of a queenmother during a naming ceremony at Gbawe Zero, a suburb of Accra, on Thursday, June 19, 2025.

The deceased, 33-year-old Pearl Naa Dodoowa Whitaker, known in private life as Naa Agyinafo I of Papase, died instantly after being shot at close range.

Another woman, 38-year-old Priscilla Na Ayele, sustained a gunshot wound to the chest and is receiving treatment at the University of Ghana Medical Centre. She is reported to be in stable condition.

At a press briefing in Accra on Monday, July 7, the police identified the suspect as Gilbert Awuni Alia, alias Starboy, an okada rider from Dentsua.

He was arrested at Asokore in the Ashanti Region, where he had fled after the incident. The police stated that he was part of a group that fired weapons indiscriminately during the ceremony.

The naming event was organised by Ibrahim Ni Ayikwashi Solomon, also known as Nii Ayi Solomon, who had earlier reported the incident to the police.

He has since been arrested after admitting to authorising the use of firearms at the event, which was attended by traditional leaders and members of various Asafu groups.

Investigators suspect that the violence was triggered by the consumption of Sobo, a locally brewed drink, which may have been laced with narcotic substances. During interrogation, Starboy reportedly confessed to firing a weapon while under the influence of alcohol.

He claimed to have fled the scene with an accomplice known only as Oxygen. Police say the suspect told them he discarded the firearm, and efforts are underway to retrieve it.

A second accomplice has also been arrested. Officers have retrieved a locally manufactured weapon, along with spent cartridges and gunpowder, as part of their ongoing investigations.

The police condemned the unauthorised use of firearms at public events, warning that anyone found culpable will face prosecution.

“Possession and discharge of firearms without lawful authority is a serious offence,” the command stated.

High Court orders jailed Agradaa to open defense for allegedly sharing prophet’s nude images

The High Court has ordered self-styled evangelist and founder of Heaven Way Champions International Ministry, Patricia Asiedua Asiamah, widely known as Nana Agradaa, to open her defence in a case where she is accused of sharing nude images of Prophet Emmanuel Appiah Fomum.

Presiding judge Mary Ekue Yanzuh dismissed a submission of no case filed by Agradaa’s legal team and ruled that the accused must respond to the charges.

“My prayer is that your ruling can be delivered in her presence. We pray for an adjournment and an order for her to be brought to court,” her lawyer, Richard Baffour, pleaded.

However, Justice Yanzuh delivered the ruling in her absence, despite the request.

The court also directed prison officials to ensure Agradaa is present at the next hearing and ordered her defence team to file their witness statements ahead of the next proceedings. The case has been adjourned to July 30 for a case management conference.

Agradaa, a former fetish priestess-turned-preacher, is facing one count of possession of obscene material and three counts of non-consensual sharing of intimate images.

According to the prosecution, she allegedly aired nude images of Prophet Fomum on her television station, Thunder TV (now called Today’s TV), in 2021.

“The first accused (Nana Agradaa) also published the nude pictures of the complainant, which she designed in the form of a product label for a drink (bitters) for sale on Thunder TV,” the prosecution stated. “On that particular programme, she shared and published the nude pictures of the said prophet.”

The charges also implicate three others, Enoch Owusu Kissi, Charles Omane, and Emmanuel Kofi Gyasi, who are accused of abetment of crime.

The prosecution said, “The second to fourth accused persons were passing disparaging remarks about the complainant’s nudity. The first accused person also caused an employee of her TV station to publish nude pictures of the complainant.”

On Thursday, July 3, the Heaven Way Champions International Ministry leader was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment by an Accra Circuit Court after finding her guilty of charlatanic advertisement and defrauding by false pretences.

Agradaa appeals 15-year sentence

Read Time:1 Minute, 0 Second

Former traditional priestess turned evangelist, Patricia Asiedua Asiamah, popularly known as Nana Agradaa, has filed an appeal challenging her 15 year jail sentence for fraud by the Accra Circuit Court.

The appeal filed at the Amasaman High Court today  is seeking a reversal of the decision by the Circuit Court.

The grounds of appeal are that the trial was wrong in law and the judgment cannot be supported by the evidence on record.

Particulars

Lawyer for Agradaa, Richard Asare Baffour, argues that the trial was wrong in law because the trial court judge denied Agradaa a fair trial.

The appeal further accused the trial circuit judge of bias against Agradaa, and claims the sentence was harsh and excessive.

Sentence

Agradaa was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment each on two counts of defrauding by false pretence , with the court ordering Agradaa to serve the two sentence concurrent.

The convict was also fined Ghc300 for charlatanic advertisement .

The conviction and sentence stemmed from a televised broadcast in 2022 in which Agradaa told the public she was willing share Ghc300,0000 to the needy during a church service  , but ended up taking various sum of money from people without giving out any money.

Police condemn reckless use of firearms at public events

Read Time:1 Minute, 37 Second

Head of Public Affairs for the Accra Regional Police Command, Superintendent Juliana Obeng, has issued a stern warning against the reckless and unlawful use of firearms at public and cultural gatherings.

Speaking at a press briefing in Accra, Superintendent Obeng condemned such behaviour, describing it as a serious threat to lives and public safety.

“At this moment, we would want to take the opportunity to strongly condemn the reckless and unlawful use of firearms at public and cultural events, which poses a grave risk to lives and public safety,” she said.

The police command also reminded the public that possession and discharge of firearms without lawful authority is a serious offence under the law.

Superintendent Obeng emphasised that anyone found violating these laws would face strict legal consequences.

“The command goes again to remind the public that possession and discharge of firearms without lawful authority is a serious offence and those who are found to be flouting the law will be dealt with accordingly,” she stated.

Her remarks follow the tragic death of Fatima, a second-year student at Bimbilla Senior High School, who was killed by a stray bullet during the annual Fire Festival in Bimbilla, Nanumba North Municipality, in the Northern Region.

The incident occurred as a crowd moved in procession from the regent’s palace to Wampu Dam, where festival rituals were expected to take place on July 6.

The caution comes ahead of a number of upcoming cultural events, including the Homowo festival by the Ga people in Accra, as authorities seek to ensure the safety and security of all participants.

Celebrations are usually accompanied by the firing of musketry loaded with gunpowder, but there is an increasing trend of the use of sophisticated guns and live ammunition.

The police urged the public to cooperate fully and report any illegal activity to help maintain peace during these celebrations.

Man killed in robbery attack on Yeji-Kumasi Highway

Read Time:56 Second

A young man has been killed in an armed robbery attack on the Yeji-Kumasi highway in the Bono East Region.

The incident occurred on Sunday, July 6, 2025, between 6:30 pm and 7:00 pm at Domeabra, a suburb of Yeji in the Pru East District.

Eyewitnesses told Adom News that the robbers signalled the driver to stop.

As he slowed down, one of them fired a gun through the vehicle, hitting the deceased, identified as a livestock seller, around the jaw.

He died before the driver could bring the vehicle to a halt.

The robbers reportedly forced all passengers to lie down on the road before making away with their belongings.

They then fled into a nearby bush before police arrived at the scene.

In recent months, the area has seen a rise in highway robbery incidents, raising concerns among residents.

Many are calling on the Ghana Police Service and the government to urgently strengthen security along the route.

Residents say inadequate support and logistics for the local police are slowing response times and undermining efforts to curb crime in the district.
