We will fence Borteyman Sports Complex land to block encroachers – Sports Minister

Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has announced plans to fence the remaining portion of the Borteyman Sports Complex to prevent encroachment on the government-owned land.

The Borteyman facility, which played a key role during the 2023 African Games, sits on 99 acres of land.

Out of that, 43 acres have been developed for the current infrastructure, with the remaining portion earmarked for future expansion.

Speaking to the media during an inspection of the site, the Minister revealed ongoing efforts to secure the undeveloped land in collaboration with relevant bodies, including the Local Organising Committee (LOC) and its Executive Chairman, Dr Kwaku Ofosu Asare.

“I will be engaging other agencies because the LOC chairman has made me aware that they had some arrangement to get the 48 engineers to do some walling,” Adams said. “That arrangement is to open, so we will have further engagement with them to see to it that, while we are waiting for other resources to continue the construction, we cover the unused space.”

“We will wall it in order to block people from doing what they are doing. Maybe it’s because it isn’t walled that people think it’s a no man’s land. This is not part of a no man’s land.”

The Minister stressed that the land is government property, and reaffirmed that it will be used solely for sports development purposes.

The Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has paid a working visit to the Borteyman Sports Complex to inspect ongoing works and assess the current state of the facility.

His visit comes in response to growing concerns over encroachment on the remaining portions of the land.

The Borteyman Sports Complex was one of the key venues used during the 2023 All-African Games hosted in Ghana.

The Minister began his tour at the multi-purpose dome, before moving to the Aquatic Centre, which features a 1,000-seater swimming arena with a 10-lane competition pool and an eight-lane warm-up pool.

“Well of course. The facility is a big one,” he said.

“We have the Aquatic center which is one of the best in Africa. I have travelled around becoming the Minister. I have been to South Africa, Tanzania, Nigeria and a couple of areas.

“I haven’t come across any facility that is of this calibre. Indeed Ghana has been given opportunity to host back to back swimming competition of this facility,”

He also inspected the multi-purpose sports hall, capable of seating 1,000 spectators and hosting sports such as basketball, badminton, netball, table tennis, and weightlifting.

The Minister then visited the administration block, checked the offices, water pumps, and moved out to inspect the remaining undeveloped portions of the land.

Speaking to the media after the inspection, he expressed disappointment about illegal occupation of the land and issued a firm warning.

“Whatever arrangements anybody is having, they should leave this space,” he said

“This space is for Ghana, Ministry of Sports and Recreation for purposes of developing sports and infrastructure that will serve the use of all of us.”

To prevent further encroachment, he revealed plans to collaborate with engineers and relevant agencies to build a wall around the facility.

“I will be engaging other agencies because the LOC chairman has made me aware that they had some arrangement to get the 48 engineers to do some walling.

”That arrangement is to open so we will have further engagement with them to see it to that while we are waiting for other resources to continue the construction to cover the unused space.

”We will wall it in order to block people from doing what they are doing. Maybe is because it is not walled, people think is a no man’s land. This is not part of a no man’s land.”

‘Leave this space now’ – Sports Minister warns Borteyman Sports Complex encroachers

Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has issued a strong warning to individuals encroaching on lands around the Borteyman Sports Complex, urging them to vacate immediately.

The Minister gave the directive during a visit to the facility to inspect ongoing works and assess its current state. The Borteyman Sports Complex was one of the major venues used during the 2023 All-African Games hosted in Ghana.

Speaking to the media after the inspection, Kofi Adams emphasised that the land is reserved strictly for the development of sports infrastructure and must not be taken over for private use.

“Whatever arrangements anybody is having, they should leave this space,” he said. “This land belongs to Ghana, and it’s under the Ministry of Sports and Recreation for the sole purpose of developing sports facilities that benefit all of us.”

The Minister also called on Ghanaians from all walks of life to support the vision of building a strong foundation for sports development in the country.

“Which part of the world doesn’t need sports infrastructure?” he asked. “We must all, regardless of our background or tribe, come together to protect and promote sports development in Ghana.”

His comments come amid growing concerns about land encroachment at the complex, which threatens to derail long-term plans to expand and upgrade the facility for future national and international competitions.
